Discipleship Groups
Listed here are our existing groups, each of which is making plans to maximize this season after Pentecost by incorporating N.T. Wright's Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church into their time together. Although it is rare these days to live in close proximity to extended family, many of us still remember a time, albeit vaguely, when we did. We remember that aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents played a significant role in our development as human beings. In some cases, these memories are among the best of our lives. In others, the influence of this community left us longing for something authentic, something safe, something whole.
Regardless of our childhood experiences with extended family, each of us knows somewhere inside that there is immeasurable value in being part of something bigger than ourselves, yet not so big that we get lost in the crowd.
When we are honest, we all know that we could truly benefit from participating in a not too big, not too small community where people know us and love us and let us do the same for them.Truly, a community that reminds us that we are not the center of the universe, while assuring us that we matter within it, is an amazing asset in our lives.
It is no accident, then, that Jesus developed one such community as his first priority.
With a handful of intimate companions, our Lord changed the course of history forever, and the world has been better off for it ever since. With the early church as our model and the Spirit of Christ as our leader, our hope is to follow in his footsteps. All the while, we are praying that doing so will yield the kind of transformational presence in the world that his community did.
Consequently, Discipleship Groups are becoming the backbone of our church body. We believe there is a great difference between a church with small groups and a church of small groups. Simply stated, we intend to be a church of small groups.
These groups are certainly not the only ones that gather at Good Shepherd, but we are striving for them to become the catalytic component of our life together. They provide the context for us to worship God, love one another, and bless the world. And they do so in a way that neither the smaller gathering in the home nor the larger gathering of corporate worship can.
